Can A Chiropractor Reduce My Back Pain?

by Randy Goodson on 2010/12/29

Once you have injured your body, particularly your back, it may take you a very long time to get back into shape. Many people just try to tough it out and if you turn to a traditional MD for treatment you may be prescribed the usual stupor inducing concoctions of pain pills, rest or exercises that take time to help out.

Chiropractors use quick movements that extend joints beyond their usual range of motion in one way or another. Some people are a little taken aback by the twisting or cracking that accompanies any good adjustment, but don't fear. Some people are left slightly sore after being put back into proper alignment but that is expected if you are way out of line. Then you are one step closer to being better than before.

To be most successful, Chiropractic treatment must be utilized regularly to be effective. Most people will want to visit the chiropractor at least once a week to get maximum benefit out of their adjustments. Severe back problems may involve months or even years of treatment, while some may only require a single treatment, but a regular maintenance routine is vital to ensure successful re-alignment of the spine.

Your chiropractor will not ask you to do anything that you are not comfortable with, so don't worry about that. When aligning your spine, the doctor may put you into some fairly awkward positions, and rapidly move your body to stimulate the adjustment. This is done to make manipulation easier, after all if your bones do not move, it will not help you get better.

After aligning certain joints, the doctor may adjust other smaller joints that may be limited in their range of motion as well. Any additional adjustments will be applied to each joint in succession to re-align you as needed to be. You will probably be finished off by some time on the roller table and then you can visit again in a week or so.

You spine should be more mobile and have less pain involved in its movement than before your adjustment. The long term goals of chiropractic treatment do include pain reduction and returned mobility, especially in the back.
